Sorti en avril 1988, il s'agit du deuxième album de Public Ennemy, sur le fameux label Def Jam. Lors de sa sortie, l'album connait un immense succès. On y trouve une utilisation fréquente de samples et de références à la cuture pop. Un an plus tard, l'album est certifié platine aux Etats-Unis. Beaucoup d'autres artistes se sont inspirés de ce que proposait alors le duo new-yorkais, notamment Madonna ou encore Jay-Z.
